Canon 80d with 18 135 stm lens

If you wish for an upgrade from a Canon kit lens to a zoom lens with a larger focal length range, then the choice between the Canon mm with an emphasis on wide angle or the Canon mm STM with emphasis on telephoto seems logical. Compared with the previous mm version, a zoom lock is added and you can manually adjust focus at any time without first turning off the AF.

The zoom range of this lens the is equal to a wide range of popular fixed focal lengths on a full frame camera: 28 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm, mm and mm.

An impressive 7. Thanks to the use of high quality plastics, this lens is very light. Even the filter mount is plastic. Yet this lens feels solid and has a metal mount. When your face is close to the camera and the zoom ring quickly moves up and down, you feel an airflow past your eyes. This means that this lens is sensitive to dust. This is common for many zoom lenses, but in this case we really noticed the air flow. It may take some time to get used to the manual focus.

It is only possible when the camera is on, because it has an electronic control. It is less pleasant than manual focusing the older Canon mm or mm Canon lenses. This is beneficial for shooting at slow shutter speeds where you do not have a tripod at your disposal.

We tested the image stabilization at a 60 mm focal length. This is actually a gain of 3 stops. If you accept a little loss of sharpness, it will in practice be possible to actually gain 4 stops thanks to the image stabilization.

During our lens reviews, for jpg files we use all available in-camera lens correction capabilities. The uncorrected RAW files show a degree of vignetting which is not unusual for superzoom lenses. Depending on the focal length, from 0. After stopping down 1 stop, all vignetting completely disappears. Also characteristic of super zoom lenses, is the high degree of distortion that varies from visible barrel at a focal length below 30 mm to slightly visible pin cushion at focal lengths above mm.

Compared to its predecessor, the number of diaphragm blades increased from six to seven, which might contribute to a slightly nicer bokeh. However, a light source in the background can show clear rings and the Out of Focus area OOF in the sample image of two birds shown below does not look real smooth.

Many photographers will prefer a bright lens with a fixed focal length, if they really care about bokeh. For zoom lenses with a large zoom range, because of the complex design with a large number of lens elements, it is not unusual to encounter flare and ghosting. Nevertheless, the Canon mm STM performed unexpectedly well. When the sun shines right into the lens, a reduced contrast can be seen in a small area around the light source. This good performance will partly be due to the Super Spectra coating which is applied to each lens element.

In this part, it delivers solid performance. Starting at full aperture, the sharpness pretty good. The highest acuity is reached after 1 or 2 stops aperture. Interestingly, the sharpness in the corners at most focal lengths little remains on the sharpness in the center. Only at the extreme focal lengths 18 mm and mmthe corner sharpness at full aperture visible behind the center sharpness.

The amount of lateral chromatic aberration in jpg files from the Canon D is, thanks to in-camera correction of lens errors, low at all focal lengths. RAW files do show visible chromatic aberration in large prints, particularly at a focal length of less than 35 mm. These well known green and purple edges at sharp contrast transitions in the corners of the image are easy to correct in Photoshop or Lightroom, using the Canon mm STM lens correction profiles. Optically, the Canon mm zoom lens STM is slightly better, but not much different than its predecessor.

The main differences of this review compared to the Canon mm review that we have previously published, is the improved performance for chromatic aberration and vignetting.

And these improvements are caused by the in-camera lens corrections made by the Canon D.Is the mm lens with the new 80D the same lens 18 mm that came on the 70D or have they upgarded the lens.

It is supposed to be faster focusing but still just as quiet. You ask quietly to borrow it. The answer is here. I think that all the evidence we have so far is that optically the new lens is the same as the previous one the STM lens.

I was thinking about buying a 80D body only and reusing my mm from my 70D.

But I will wait to see the reviews. My understanding is that it can also be used with the new zoom motor drive. I don't think the original can. I hope that they make it clear in the name. People may end up buying the original non-STM lens when they intended to buy the new one.

Not a staff member, or paid employee, of DPReview. Any insults, implied anger, bad grammar and bad spelling, are entirely unintentionalal. If you don't have need of the new power zoom attachment the new lens and are ok with the AF speed then the new lens sounds like it won't bring much improvement.

Wait for the tests to see if there is any IQ differences. In the old days, there were a few posts from people upset because they bought a 30D for a great price, only to find out that they had misread the ad and bought an overpriced D30 the first Canon DSLR. In this case, the stated prices are a good indication of which is newer. But still, it wouldn't surprise me if someone, somewhere, bought one thinking it was another.

The "old" USM would overshoot was the issue? Hmm, doesn't a recent Sony lens that was taken part and analyzed use the same type of motor? Can't recall For still photographers, we feel the Nikon Z5 represents the best value for the money when it comes to full-frame mirrorless cameras. Which is why it receives our top award. The Sony ZV-1 was designed specifically for vloggers, but this compact camera is an excellent option for still photographers too.

We got our hands on the brand new Instax SQ1: an easy-to-use instant camera that shoots square format film. Despite a couple of quirks, we think it's a camera that photographers and non-photographers alike will find fun to use.

Their light weight, small size, wide image stabilized focal length range and very good image quality made this combo a great choice for long periods of carrying.

I was attending a large family social event when the above scene presented itself. I had this small, light camera and lens combination with me for one these just-in-case situations. Multiplying the 's focal length range by 1. This is an excellent general purpose focal length rangestarting at a moderately wide angle and going to a very nicely-long focal length. Here is an example of what this focal length range looks like:.

Cannon 18-135 mm EF-S zoom lense Review with cannon 80D (sample Images and Footages)

Image stabilization is an STM feature that I wish was present in every lens I own - one that helps insure the sharpest image possible while shooting handheld.

Canon rates this IS implementation at 4 stops. With IS on, my acceptable keeper rate shutter speed was about. That is an impressive nearly 4 stops of improvement at 18mm and better than 4 stops at mm.

The above 18mm. Image stabilization works — and is very useful even at 18mm. Of course, just because you can shoot at these long shutter speeds doesn't mean you should. IS does not keep your subject still. People move. The wind blows.

The quietness and smoothness of the STM's image stabilization implementation make it especially well-suited for video capture. It is also well behaved — IS does not cause the viewfinder to jump — also helpful for video capture.

This makes subject framing easier — and makes your photography a more pleasant experience. The STM features " The STM also features auto-panning detection — a switch setting is not required for the lens to stabilize in one direction only. Auto tripod sensing is also featured. Canon recommends turning IS off when using a tripod to conserve a small amount battery life and leaving IS on when using a monopod to assist in stabilizing the image.

IS is especially helpful on a relatively narrow aperture lens such as this one. Details of the max aperture step-down as focal length is increased are in the Lens Specifications link at the top of this review, but this is not a good lens for stopping action in low light levels — at least not without a flash.

The max aperture step-down improved slightly from the previous in our tests. My previously-scheduled trip to Maine did not allow lab evaluation of the STM prior to leaving, but I wanted to try this lens out while traveling — and did so. My laptop's monitor is too sharp, but even taking this fact into consideration, the STM results while traveling appeared reasonable — as expected. This is Canon's third iteration of the EF-S mm image stabilized lens.

The first model featured a cost-effective DC motor. The second generation received a stepping motor, producing smooth and very quiet focus acquisition and tracking that was ideal for Movie Servo AF. But, this Ring USM is like no other we've seen before. Read on to learn more about this feature.

Narrowing down the focal length or focal length range ideal for your photographic needs is the first criterion for lens selection. The focal length chosen for a particular image determines the distance required for proper framing and in turn, the perspective.

There are times when the ideal subject distance cannot be obtained, perhaps due to an obstacle such as a walland in those cases, having a zoom range to work with permits ideal subject framing from the subject distance available to you. With a smaller imaging sensor than full frame models, APS-C format cameras do not require the larger image circle projected by full frame compatible lenses, permitting APS-C-only "EF-S" lenses to be smaller, lighter and less expensive to manufacture relative to their full frame lens counterparts which remain compatible with the APS-C cameras.

Using a smaller image circle means that APS-C sensor format cameras frame a scene more tightly, with 1. Multiplying mm by 1. The list of uses for these focal lengths is as long as the focal length range itself. Even if I had the time to create a comprehensive list of uses for this wide general purpose focal length rangeyou would not likely have the time or interest to read it.

But, I'll get you started with some ideas. For sure is that this is an excellent travel lens. When traveling, especially when not driving yourself to the location, your luggage size and weight is likely limited.

Fewer lenses with smaller size and weights make conforming to these requirements easier. Also, traveling frequently involves spending lots of time with a camera in hand. The same reasons make this use less tiring and more pleasant. A superb set of portrait focal lengths are built into this lens, including the much-acclaimed mm full frame angle of view equivalent range. The ideal focal lengths are provided for full body portraits 29mm was used for the above image through tight head shots.

Preserving family memories can be fully accommodated by these focal lengths. While I prefer a lens that zooms out to a 24mm angle of view equivalent 15mm if landscape photography is on my to-do list, the 29mm equivalent angle of view at 18mm will take in moderately wide views of nature. And, the rest of the focal lengths included in this lens are all very useful for landscape photography. For an example of what this focal length range looks like, we head below the Ben Franklin Bridge in New Jersey and view the Philadelphia skyline below it.

If you are considering a lens with 50mm or similar at the long end, specifically compare the 50mm focal length to mm. The difference is dramatic — the extra length is really nice to have without a lens change required.

The lower the number, the more light the lens will allow to reach the sensor. Because aperture is measured as a ratio of lens opening to focal length and because this lens has a basically constant maximum opening, this lens has a variable max aperture.

As the focal length increases, the maximum opening size does not appreciably increase, resulting in aperture measurements stepping down. Here is a chart showing the specific focal lengths where this happens along with the same information for a selection of other lenses.

This is only a very minor concern, but I encountered it frequently when testing at 50mm. Allowing more light to reach the sensor permits freezing action and handholding the camera in lower light levels and can also permit use of lower less noisy ISO settings.

In addition to allowing more light to reach the sensor, increasing the opening permits a stronger, subject-isolating background blur at equivalent focal lengths. Another benefit, especially when shooting in Manual exposure mode, is that constant max aperture lenses permit that max aperture to be set and remain constant regardless of the focal length selected.

The advantages to a narrow aperture, because the size of the lens elements can be reduced significantly in size, include smaller size, lighter weight and lower cost. Those are three things that we all can appreciate. However, many are near-equivalents and this max aperture range is not unusual, especially for non-professional lenses.Sign out. Mirrorless Cameras.
